He Had Nice Teeth

“He had nice teeth!”

the preacher smiled.

“Never speak evil of the dead,”

he’d often heard

his mother say.

So, he eyed the man

before him                                                                                      smile-quotes-lgrvqlvz

laid stiff in

borrowed suit;

saw the cigar

in his mouth,

smelt his breath;

thought of all the days

he’d waited for his touch;

                               saw his mama

                                    flash before him

                                         with a blood-soaked rag

                                                          against her cheeks;

swallowed bile,                       The-Most-Beautiful-Smile-Is-The-One-That-Struggles-Through-Tears

dried his eye

and smiled,

“He had nice teeth!”

Smile, even when it hurts.

And when you can’t find something good to say,

say something good anyway!
