Destiny

Black skin.

Flat nose.

Big feet.                                                              tumblr_m5xck4abd81qeu5l5o1_r2_500

Hair

stunted on my head.

These are the ‘givens’ I accept.

But

black coals burning

on a fireside;

worn clothing on

my back;

bending over a

half-a-tub

scrubbing,

are only

rudimentary fragments

of the life I gained

not the way the

story’s meant to end.

Poverty is no given.

But beauty is,

no matter what

its skin.
